Liverpool missed out on the chance to move up to sixth in the Premier League table after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Not even the return of Luis Suarez was enough to stop the Reds sharing the points on their own turf for an eighth time in 12 league games this season.

The stalemate means that Liverpool remain in seventh place, where they are now one point behind Arsenal. Tottenham remain in third following their first goalless draw of the season, five points behind Manchester United and seven short of leaders Manchester City.

Manchester United came from three goals down to draw 3-3 at Chelsea in a pulsating Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.

Second-half strikes from Juan Mata and David Luiz added to a first-half own-goal by Jonny Evans to bring up a 3-0 scoreline that flattered the hosts somewhat.

But United raised their game and, spearheaded by Wayne Rooney – who netted two penalties – they drew level thanks to a late Javier Hernandez header.

David De Gea made an incredible late save to deny Mata’s wonderful free-kick, with the Spaniard tipping over a Gary Cahill effort at the death as the spoils were shared in West London.

The result means United are two points behind leaders Manchester City, while fourth-placed Chelsea edge a point ahead of Newcastle United, who beat Aston Villa earlier on Sunday.

Papiss Demba Cisse had a dream debut as his goal gave Newcastle United a 2-1 win at home to Aston Villa, putting his side fifth in the Premier League.

Cisse, signed from Freiburg in January but unavailable until now because of the African Cup of Nations, rifled in an expert half-volley with 18 minutes left to add to Senegal team-mate Demba Ba’s opener, which had been cancelled out by Robbie Keane’s 150th goal in English football.

The result sees Toon move above Arsenal into fifth, behind Chellsea only on goal difference: Alan Pardew’s men will hope that Manchester United get a positive result at Stamford Bridge as the Magpies chase an unlikely Champions League place.

Manchester City moved back on track in their Premier League title hunt with a 3-0 win at home to Fulham at a snowy Eastlands.

The league leaders, stunned 1-0 at Everton last time out, overcame the poor conditions with a Sergio Aguero penalty, Chris Baird own-goal and Edin Dzeko strike to open up a three-point, nine-goal gap on second-placed Manchester United, who visit Chelsea on Sunday.

City controlled the game, dominating possession and pegging Fulham back into their own half for large swathes of the first half.

However, the Premier League leaders seemed a touch static when reaching the final third, with the exception of Adam Johnson, a livewire on the right, although he faded in the second half.

Robin van Persie hit a hat-trick as Arsenal halted their poor recent run with a 7-1 win at home to 10-man Blackburn Rovers.

The Dutchman opened the scoring in the second minute with his 100th career league goal, adding a second to put Arsenal back in front after Rovers had levelled through Morten Gamst Pedersen’s free-kick.

The superb Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain grabbed the first of his two goals, opening his Premier League account just before Gael Givet was shown a straight red card for a reckless lunge on Van Persie.

Mikel Arteta added a fourth for Arsenal early in the second half, while Oxlade-Chamberlain – who along with fellow winger Theo Walcott had been a nightmare for Rovers – made it 5-1 with a cool low finish after his fellow ex-Southampton trainee’s mazy run.

Just after the hour mark Van Persie completed his treble with a blasted finish into the roof of the net, taking his season tally to 22 in the league – more than last season’s top scorers Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez had managed by the end of the campaign.

Arsenal missed the chance to close the gap on the Premier League’s top four after being held to a goalless draw which gave Bolton another priceless point in their relegation battle.

The Gunners dominated proceedings at the Reebok Stadium with Robin van Persie twice being denied by the woodwork but they failed to take a number of other chances.

With Newcastle beating Blackburn it meant Arsene Wenger’s side dropped to seventh in the table, while Wanderers, still just above the drop zone, edged two points ahead of Rovers.

Arsenal have now taken just one point from their last three away matches, although they marginally improved on their defeat at the Reebok last season.

After earning six points from a possible nine in January Owen Coyle’s side are playing with confidence and recorded their first clean sheet in 12 league matches dating back to November.

That was partly down to Arsenal’s failure to take advantage of their dominance, particularly early on, and partly to the frame of the goal in front of the travelling support.

Charles N’Zogbia scored his first goal for Aston Villa and spoilt the debut of QPR striker Djibril Cisse as Alex McLeish’s side rallied from 2-0 down to earn a point in a 2-2 draw at Villa Park.

Cisse scored a stunning debut goal and then Villa defender Stephen Warnock’s own goal doubled their lead.

But Darren Bent gave the home side a lifeline before half-time with his 100th Premier League goal before N’Zogbia equalised.

Fraizer Campbell scored for the second time in four days as Sunderland battered Norwich 3-0.

The 24-year-old, who marked the end of his injury misery with a goal on his return to action on Sunday, needed just 21 minutes to double his tally for the season with a sumptuous volley which set the Black Cats on their way to a resounding Premier League victory.

Stephane Sessegnon added a second seven minutes later and the points were safe nine minutes into the second half when Phil Bardsley’s cross ended up in the back of the net with the help of deflections off defender Daniel Ayala and keeper John Ruddy.

The win extended manager Martin O’Neill’s run since he replaced Steve Bruce to just two defeats in 11 games in all competitions and extended his side’s points tally to 30 – one more than tonight’s visitors – to the delight of a crowd of 34,476.

Newcastle climbed to fifth place in the Premier League after a 2-0 victory over Blackburn that left Steve Kean’s strugglers rueing a host of missed chances.

The visitors went ahead in the 12th minute when Ryan Taylor’s speculative 25-yard effort took a wicked deflection off Scott Dann, but Rovers dominated the rest of the first half, with Danny Simpson clearing off the line and Leon Best heading against his own bar before David Dunn saw his penalty saved by Tim Krul.

The second half was a quieter affair but Anthony Modeste, Scott Dann and Mauro Formica all missed good chances to earn Rovers what would have been a deserved share of the spoils before Gabriel Obertan rubbed salt into the wound with a late second.

Fulham began life after Bobby Zamora with a whimper as West Brom secured a point on Roy Hodgson’s first return to Craven Cottage.

The 31-year-old striker left for west London rivals QPR yesterday, leaving the home side bereft of attacking ideas.

Makeshift striker Clint Dempsey looked like he would prove Fulham’s saviour once again as he tucked home midway through the second period.

However, the Cottagers lacked a cutting edge and West Brom made them pay with eight minutes remaining.

Substitute Somen Tchoyi fired home in front of the visiting support to ensure Hodgson took home a point home after a tough battle with his former club.
